İztuzu is a stunning 4.5-kilometre stretch of protected beach where endangered Caretta caretta (loggerhead sea turtles) come to nest between May and September. To protect nesting turtles, sections of the beach are closed after sunset during nesting season. The beach is accessible by boat from Dalyan town (a 30-minute scenic river journey) or by road from the landward side.
Carved dramatically into the cliff face overlooking the Dalyan River, the Lycian Rock Tombs date from the 4th century BC and are among the most visually striking ancient monuments in Turkey. They are best viewed at dusk from a river boat, when the setting sun illuminates the carved facades.
Dalyan is famous for its therapeutic sulphur mud baths. Visitors coat themselves in the warm mineral mud, allow it to dry in the sun, then wash off in the adjacent thermal pool. The experience is said to be excellent for skin conditions and joint pain. The mud baths are located along the river and are easily reached by boat.
The primary way to explore Dalyan is by traditional flat-bottomed wooden boat along the river delta. Most boat tours combine İztuzu Beach, the rock tombs, and the mud baths into a single full-day excursion, typically with a fresh fish lunch at a riverside restaurant.
Dalyan's riverside restaurants are known for their freshly caught fish and mezes. Sitting by the river with a glass of local wine while the wooden boats drift past the rock tombs is one of the most memorable dining experiences in Turkey.
